The Kronwerk Canal or the Kronwerk Street ( Russian Кронверкский пролив , Kronwerkski proliw ) is a narrow canal in Saint Petersburg that separates the Petrograd Island from the Rabbit Island . It forms an arch about 1 km long and 50 m wide. The Hasenisel in the southeast is dominated by the Peter and Paul Fortress , and in the north is the Kronwerk on Petrograd Island. The two islands are connected by the newer Kronwerk Bridge in the west and the Johannes Bridge in the east. The latter was the first bridge built in St. Petersburg, originally built in 1703 as a wooden floating bridge.
