Goiter inflammation
The Kropf inflammation ( Ingluvitis ) is an inflammation of the crop mucosa in birds . It can be infectious, but also through foreign bodies, burns or chemical burns of the mucous membrane. A typical symptom is contaminated plumage in the head area due to regurgitation . If necessary, the thickening of the mucous membrane can be palpated, sometimes a widening of the goiter occurs. A goiter rinse or swab sample is necessary to clarify infectious causes . Treatment depends on the cause.
Possible infectious causes are yeasts ( candidiasis , macrorhabdiosis ), protozoa ( trichomonas ), more rarely bacteria and viruses ( herpes virus infection in pigeons , reovirus infection in gray parrots ).
