Maria-Elisabeth Krautwald-Junghanns (born August 24, 1957 in Amberg ) is a German veterinarian and professor at the University of Leipzig .

Career

Krautwald-Junghanns studied veterinary medicine at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen from 1977 to 1982 and was qualified as a veterinarian for poultry in 1988. She completed her habilitation in 1995 and was appointed private lecturer at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen in 1996. In 1999 she moved to Leipzig and took over the professorship for bird and reptile diseases at the Clinic for Small Animals at the University of Leipzig . There she first became director of the newly founded clinic for birds and reptiles at the University of Leipzig in 2006 and, from 2007, also professor for bird and reptile diseases at this clinic.

research

Krautwald-Junghanns deals with ornamental, zoo and wild bird medicine and non-invasive, imaging diagnostics in birds. She has developed an ultrasound method that is one of the standard methods of examination for birds. In addition, she helped to develop a method for spectroscopic sex determination in fertilized hen's eggs, with which the sex of chicks can be determined three days after incubation. This can avoid killing chicks after they hatch. Krautwald-Junghanns is also investigating how the keeping and breeding of farm poultry can be implemented in a manner that is appropriate to the species and animal welfare.

Krautwald-Junghanns is the author of numerous scientific publications. Together with Erhard Franz Kaleta , she is the editor of the German standard work for bird medicine, the compendium of ornamental bird diseases . In addition, she is co-editor of the work Atlas of imaging diagnostics in pets .
