The Krottensee is a dead lake in the urban area of Gmunden . The Krottensee is a eutrophic clear water lake with extensive silting stocks. Due to its diverse flora, the lake was designated as a natural monument in 1980 ( list entry ).

etymology

The name is derived from Krot ( toad ). In Franziscäischen cadastre is Krottenseer , probably the house name of an agricultural estate, in the northeast of today's natural monument, noted.

location

The lake is located in the Traundorf district (KG Schlagen) between Krottenseestraße and Cumberland Castle and is part of the Cumberland Castle Park. It has a maximum depth of 2 meters. Underneath there is a layer of digested sludge up to 5 m thick.

History and use

In the Hallstatt period , people were buried in cremation graves in the vicinity of the Krottensee. In the Middle Ages, the water was available as a reservoir for fire extinguishing water, in the 19th century the Krottensee area was used as a litter meadow. From the 1950s onwards there were landfills and garbage deposits. The complete filling or targeted drying of the lake was ultimately prevented for financial reasons and by idealists. Starting in 1996, the lake will be carefully revitalized every three to five years in smaller, locally limited areas. The lake had almost dried up due to the long period of heat in summer 2018. The water level returned to normal in 2019.

Below Cumberland Castle there is a short path with display boards, from which there is a good view, especially of the so-called north ditch of the Krottensee (see photo).

The island

The most beautiful and at the same time most sensitive part of the Krottensee is its island, which is strictly forbidden to enter. It has a unique vegetation.

morphology

The Krottensee fills a dead ice hole within the terminal moraine of the Traunsee glacier from the Würm glacial period . The area of the lake is about 3.5 hectares. 0.7 hectares of this is taken up by open water. The largest part is covered by a wooded swinging lawn, which is enclosed by a 1 to 5 m narrow, trench-like and partially silted up still water and therefore forms an island. The lake has no superficial feeders or drains.

vegetation

The Krottensee is characterized by different habitat types ( rocking lawn with bog forest, open water area and its silting swamps, deciduous forest) in which rare plants grow, such as round-leaved sundew ( Drosera rotundiflora ), swamp blood-eye ( Comarum palustre ) and narrow-leaved laurel rose ( Kalmia angustiflolia ). In addition, up to 23 types of moss and 250 types of mushrooms can be found.
