Krzysztof Nowak (born September 27, 1975 in Warsaw , Poland , † May 26, 2005 in Wolfsburg , Germany ) was a Polish football player .

Career

society

Nowak played as a youth from 1985 for the Polish clubs Opal Lubosz , RKS Ursus Warszawa , Sokół Pniewy and GKS Tychy . In 1996 he went to Greece to Panachaiki Patras . In the same year KP Legia Warszawa signed him , from where he moved to Brazil to Athletico Paranaense . In 1998 he came to VfL Wolfsburg . He played a total of 83 Bundesliga games as number 10 with VfL.

National team

For the Polish national football team , he completed ten international matches between 1997 and 1999 .

Sickness and death

From the end of 2000, Krzysztof Nowak suffered from incurable amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a degenerative disease of the motor nervous system , which the treating physicians initially had problems with diagnosing Nowak for a long time. He was still able to play a few games for VfL, but on February 10, 2001 Nowak played his last Bundesliga game in a 3-1 win in Berlin against Hertha . The diagnosis was not made until March 2001. Krzysztof Nowak had to end his football career at the age of 25.

For years, already exhausted in a wheelchair, he and his family attended his club's games until he died in 2005 at the age of 29. He was buried in the Wolfsburg forest cemetery. Krzysztof Nowak left behind his wife and a son and daughter. The fans of VfL Wolfsburg will remember it with the title The number 10 of hearts . The Krzysztof Nowak Foundation he founded in Wolfsburg on May 2, 2002 supports ALS patients and ALS research projects.
