Ksenija Turković

Ksenija Turković (born February 13, 1964 in Zagreb , Yugoslavia ) is a Croatian lawyer and judge at the European Court of Human Rights .

Live and act

Turković studied law at the University of Zagreb , where she obtained her final diploma in 1987. In 1989, she obtained a Master of Laws degree from Yale University . In 1996 she received her PhD from Yale for Dr. iur. and was admitted to the New York Bar that same year. She worked in America for the law firms Sullivan & Cromwell and Hunton & Williams, where she worked as a legal advisor on a case before the International Criminal Court for the former Yugoslavia . Since 2005 she has held a full professorship in criminal law at the University of Zagreb. From 2008 to 2010 she was Dean of the Faculty of Law and from 2008 to 2012 Vice Rector of the University.

In addition to her work as a professor, Turković was vice-president of a committee set up by the Council of Europe against the sexual abuse of children (2006/07) and of a panel of experts on child-friendly justice (2009/10). She was also the President of the Committee of Experts that drafted the new Croatian Penal Code adopted in 2011. In addition, she is the author of several specialist and textbooks on criminal law that have been published in Croatian .

In October 2012, Turković was elected Judge at the European Court of Human Rights to succeed Nina Vajić as representative of Croatia . She began her term of office, which is expected to last until 2022, on January 2, 2013. Since May 1st, 219 she has also been President of Section I of the ECHR. On April 24th, she was elected the new Vice-President of the Court of Justice by the General Assembly of Judges at the ECHR.
