Etymology and history of research

Paul Gervais described the hummingbird under the name Ornismya Ricordii . He named Santiago de Cuba as the site . The word Chlorostilbon is made up of the Greek words "chlōros χλωρός " for "green" and "stilbōn στίλβων " for "shining". The Greeks gave Mercury the nickname Stilbōn , which is due to the verb "stilb" for "blink". "Ricordii" was dedicated to the collector of the type specimen Alexandre Ricord (1798–1876). Christophe Annedouche (1803–1866) provided an illustration of a male and a female for the description .
