Cake book

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kuchenbuch is a German family name .

Origin and meaning

The name "Kuchenbuch" (different spelling: "Kugenbuch") comes like all localities on "-buch" ("Schönbuch", "Weilimbuch" or simply "Buch" and "Buchen") from a wooded hill (= "book") , often occupied by a castle or a courtyard. “Book” emphasizes the forest cover on the hill or mountain.

The formation of “kuchen” or “kugen” also alludes to a hill, but emphasizes the shape (outstanding elevation). Here, too, there are still verifiable place names with the wording “Kuchen”, as well as mountain names in combination with “-kuchen”, e.g. B. the "Kuchenspitze" in Austria . Other formations with "-kogel" or "-kugen" must also be proven.

The name “Kuchenbuch” or “Kugenbuch” has been on record at least since the end of the Middle Ages. Even today it occurs increasingly in Eichsfeld in Thuringia and probably has its origin there (in the vicinity of Heiligenstadt ). The most plausible name interpretation is provided by Bruno Günther, according to which the beeches on the mountain or “Kogel” gave the property its name: “The first name bearer will have got its name from such a conspicuous beech that stood next to his house or on his property. “Günther traces the line“ K. ”completely back to 1500 on the basis of church registers and tax lists (at that time wealthy farmers and partly Schultheißen in Eichsfeld). For the time before and the question of how the "K." s came to their possession, church registers are no longer accessible as a source due to the change of denomination and must be replaced by other sources.

Günther also rejects other interpretations (e.g. "cake book" as a nickname). Parallel name formations (e.g. the families “ Kuchenreuther ” or “ Kuchendorff ”, sd) as well as etymological derivations prove him right.
