Kuchipudi ( Telugu : కూచిపూడి ) is a classical Indian dance form from the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh . Kuchipudi is also the name of a small village in the Taluk Divi of Krishna district . Resident Brahmins practiced the dance and this is where the place got its name.

history

The wedding of the dance took place during the reign of the Golkonda sultan Abdul Hassan Tanesha, when Kuchipudi brahmins are said to have received land gifts from Tanesha for their dance performances.

Siddhendra Yogi is considered to be the first teacher who taught the current form of this dance drama . One of his well-known creations is called Bhamakalapam . He also taught this dance art to boys of the Brahmin caste, although it is now dominated by women.

Well-known representatives of Kuchipudi are Vempati Chinna Satyam, Vedantam Lakshminarayana, Tadepalli Perayya, Chinta Krishna Murthy, Vedantam Sathya Narayana Sarma, Pasumarthi Venu Gopala Krishna Sarma, Mrinalini Sadananda, Nilimma Devi, Anuranta. Sarala Numari and Saranta.

In Chennai , Tamil Nadu , dance is taught at the Kuchipudi Arts Academy .

A performance usually begins with the introduction of the characters. The dancers come on stage individually and present their roles with a small composition of song and dance (daru). Then the actual performance begins. Kuchipudi is accompanied by singing typical South Indian, so-called Carnatic music . South Indian instruments such as mridangam (percussion), flute and tambura (string instrument that is plucked) are used for the music .
