The cuckoo weevil ( Lasiorhynchites sericeus ) is a beetle from the family of leaf rollers (Attelabidae) and belongs to the subfamily of the shoots (Rhynchitinae).
features
The beetles are about six millimeters long and have long protruding hairy bodies. They are colored metallic blue, violet or green-blue, the antennae and legs being metallic black. Their trunk ( rostrum ) is as long as the head and is slightly wider at the front than at the back. On the upper side, three longitudinal ribs run from the base of the trunk to the antennae root. The head is loosely punctured, the temples are noticeably longer than the compound eyes. The pronotum is more densely punctured than the head, the rows of dots on the wing cover just reach the end. The spaces between the rows of dots are also roughly dotted, which makes the rows of dots indistinct. The species can be confused with Lasiorhynchites cavifrons , whose rows of dots on the wings are finer towards the rear and the spaces between them are also more finely dotted. There is also the very similar species Lasiorhynchites olivaceus , which is usually smaller.
Occurrence and way of life
The animals are found in almost all of Europe, east to Transcaucasia and Algeria. They are absent in Fennoscandia , the northern limit of distribution runs through Denmark. They are also found in the British Isles. The adults can be found on oak trees from mid-April to July . The females do not build any coils themselves and lay their eggs in the leaf coils of the oak leaf roller ( Attelabus nitens ). The larvae live there as space parasites and feed on the oak leaf together with the host larvae. The overwintering takes place inside the coil, pupation takes place in spring.
