As a ball joint ball or ball head is referred to in the film and photographic technique , a component for connection of cameras to tripods , which via a ball joint , a flexible vertical and horizontal alignment and lateral tilting of the photographic apparatus allows. In contrast to the three-way pointer , the ball head does not lock different axes individually, but a single handle locks the entire joint . In return, this means that it is more difficult to set specific axes.

Equipment features

Some ball heads therefore have an additional horizontal setting to make panoramic shots easier . High quality models have a friction setting of the main ball, very important for working with heavy equipment. The size of the joint ball plays a role in the stability of the tripod head. With their small ball heads, table tripods are only designed for light cameras. Ball joint heads for heavy cameras are many times this size.

As with other tripod heads, a quick release plate makes it easier to mount the camera on the ball head.
