Game of the year - list of recommendations 2012
Mensa Select 2013

Kulami is an abstract, random strategy game for two players, invented by Andreas Kuhnekath and published in 2011 by Steffen Spiele . The game is on the “ Recommended List for Game of the Year 2012” and in 2013 received the “ Mensa Select ” award .

Game idea and process

Both players take turns placing their own glass balls on the playing field made of wooden panels before the start of the game. The ball previously placed by the opponent determines the permitted rows and tiles. The players receive points at the end of the game for all plates on which they have the majority of balls; the player with the most points wins. In the extended variants, players receive additional points for long rows and the largest contiguous area.

The game material includes:

  • 17 rectangular wooden panels in different sizes: 4 × 6 fields, 5 × 4 fields, 4 × 3 fields and 4 × 2 fields (a total of 64 fields)
  • 28 glass balls each in red and black

Before the start of the game, the players assemble the playing field from the 17 wooden panels. The arrangement is arbitrary, but the extension of the playing field in all directions may not exceed 10 fields. In addition, each player receives all 28 balls of one color. The starting player is drawn.

The players take turns placing a ball on the playing field. The first ball may be placed on any square, from the second move onwards certain rules apply to the placement: A ball may only ever be placed in one of the two rows, the intersection of which is the previously placed ball. In addition, a ball may not be placed on a plate that was previously played on in one of the two rounds.

The game ends when all the balls have been placed or a player cannot place his ball without breaking the rules. Finally, both players add up their points: Each plate on which a player has the majority of balls counts points according to the plate size. Evenly occupied tiles are not counted.

For experienced players, there are also two rule extensions with which there are additional points for the largest contiguous area and rows with a length of at least five fields.

background
