Kullen ( Kullaberg ) is the name of a rocky peninsula between Arild and the Kullen lighthouse and the surrounding area ( Kullabygd ) in northwestern Skåne ( Sweden ) on the coast of the Oresund .

Geography and geology

The Kullen formed by a rugged rock formation is between one and one and a half kilometers wide and has a length of 16 km; from the Rekarekroken bay in Skälderviken to the headland extending into the Kattegat . In the eastern part it is about 100 m high. The rocks are formed by gneiss , diabase , garnet amphibolite, Cambrian sandstone and pegmatite and counted as bedrock. Some of them break vertically into the sea. Rock castles, cliffs and grottos were created by the waves . Examples of grottoes are the Silver Grotto in the south-west and the Valdemars Grotto in the north of the Kullen.

vegetation

The vegetation of the Kullaberg is formed by silicate rock corridors, rock bushes, heather, as well as partly old red beech and mountain elm canyon and rock forests. The common beech reaches the natural tree line in many places on Kullen and turns into gnarled beech bushes on the rocky peaks. Forest ponds have formed in depressions on the Kullaberg plateau. The largest is Möllemosse northeast of Mölle. The rocky coast in the surf area is populated by various seaweed (seaweed).

Wildlife

The marine area around the Kullen is regularly visited by bottlenose dolphins. Sea birds breed on the cliffs in the north.

tourism

The Kullen was first visited by botanists because of its special flora, the most famous being Carl von Linné . The beginnings of tourism on Kullaberg go back to 1860 and go hand in hand with the development of the port town of Mölle, which borders the ridge to the south, as a summer resort for tourists. The main attractions for the approximately 500,000 annual visitors today are the nature of the Kullabergs and the Kullen lighthouse, which have been protected as a nature reserve since 1965 and as a marine reserve since 1986 in a width of 300 meters. Some of the bays in the north are also suitable for swimming. In the west of the peninsula, a golf course blends into the landscape like a park. The starting point for nature tours is the “Naturum” information center at the Kullen lighthouse. From the “Port of Paradise” in the north of the lighthouse, boat tours are offered to observe bottlenose dolphins.

Trivia

A literary monument was set on the Kullaberg by Selma Lagerlöf . In the 5th chapter of his journey with the wild geese, Nils Holgersson experiences the annual meeting of all animals on the Kullaberg for peaceful games and dances.
