Kulturama

The Kulturama is a museum on evolutionary and cultural history in Zurich - Hottingen .

Exhibition concept

The Kulturama combines scientific and cultural-historical topics. It shows exhibits from palaeontology to document the evolutionary biology of humans and animals, but is also dedicated to the early advanced cultures . The peculiarity of the Kulturama is that it was created on the basis of a private initiative and that it strives for the lowest possible, didactic transfer of knowledge. It has done pioneering work in the field of museum education for children, young people and adults.

history

The museum was founded in 1978 by Paul Muggler. He wanted to create a permanent exhibition space for his traveling exhibitions (“Man in primeval times”, “Man - from conception to death”), which were shown throughout Switzerland from 1973 under the patronage of the cantonal teachers' associations. In 1987 Muggler converted the museum into a non-profit foundation and transferred his private collection to it. The Kulturama has been headed by Claudia Rütsche since 1996 . It is supported by the Schools Department of the City of Zurich and the Education Department of the Canton of Zurich . In 2005 City Councilor Monika Weber awarded Kulturama founder Paul Muggler a medal of honor for his life's work.

Location

In the course of its history, the Kulturama has changed its location five times. It was located at Zentralstrasse 153 until 1981, when, for financial reasons, it moved to temporary accommodation in the Rote Fabrik and in the Letzi schoolhouse. From 1992 the Kulturama was housed in the Wiediker Markt shopping center until it found its current location in 2001 in a property owned by the city of Zurich at 9 Englischviertelstrasse. In 2006 the extension was opened.
