The cultural landscape of the Konso is a 55 km 2 large cultural landscape in southern Ethiopia . The area is inhabited by the indigenous Konso and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011 .
The Konso
The Konso are an ethnic group living in southwest Ethiopia . They speak the Konso language of the same name and most of their members follow the traditional religion, which includes the worship of the high deity Waka .
They live in stone houses in densely built-up settlements that are fenced off by large stone walls. The few entrances are guarded around the clock.
In addition to the types of grain common in Ethiopia, their main foods also include the leaves of the cabbage tree , which are boiled with water and a little salt, and the turmeric , which are small dumplings made from corn . Common drinks are honey beer and Tschakka or Jagga , brewed from corn beer.
They use the Gadaa system for social stratification , which is also practiced by the Oromo , and they also practice phallic worship. They also use wood carvings , so-called Wagas , to commemorate their dead.
UNESCO World Heritage Site
At the 35th meeting of the World Heritage Committee in Paris , the cultural landscape was added to the list of World Heritage Sites. The committee added them based on criteria iii and v .
