Kumon is a Japanese method of individual learning support for children. The method developed over 50 years ago imparts knowledge in mathematics and languages . Students should also use these subjects to develop the ability to learn independently.

history

The founder of Kumon, Toru Kumon , was a math teacher at a high school in Osaka (Japan). When his eldest son had math problems at school, he put together assignments for him and developed study sheets that his son worked through every day. In 1957, his wife Teiko opened the first Kumon learning center in Toyonaka , Osaka Prefecture , with the help of other parents whose children also used the worksheets developed by Toru Kumon to learn. As early as 1958, the Kumon Institute of Education was founded , which gradually made the Kumon method known worldwide. According to its own information (as of 2017), more than 4 million students in 50 countries around the world are learning using the Kumon method. Kumon's first European branch was founded in Germany in 1981 . Today there are two other European offices in Great Britain and Spain .

Kumon programs

Kumon offers its learning programs for mathematics and languages, here primarily English as a foreign language or the respective national language. The basic principle at Kumon is that the students first repeat known content in order to compensate for existing deficits and to ensure a foundation for further successful learning . The children set the pace themselves. Then they work their way up to previously unknown subject areas using examples. The aim of the Kumon method is to successfully teach children to learn independently. In addition to technical knowledge, the method promotes the children's ability to concentrate , independence and self-confidence . The Kumon learning materials are continuously developed, taking into account the experiences and impressions of students from all over the world.

Companies

The Kumon group of companies is 60 percent owned by the Kumon family under the direction of Toru Kumon's widow Teiko. The American Forbes Magazine in March 2009 estimated the value of the entire company at 650 million US dollars . In Germany , Kumon is represented by Kumon Deutschland GmbH based in Düsseldorf . The individual learning centers are assigned to qualified franchise partners. According to its own information, Kumon is the fourth largest franchisor in the world and the world's largest franchise system in the field of individual promotion. There are currently around 150 Kumon learning centers in Germany.
