The Kumtag Desert or Kumutage Shamo ( 庫姆塔格 沙漠 / 库姆塔格 沙漠 , Kùmǔtǎgé Shāmò , English Kumutage Desert / Kumtag Desert ) in Xinjiang is a sandy desert in the Tarim Basin southeast of Lop Nur .
The Kumtag Desert covers an area of 22,800 square kilometers and is bordered by Dunhuang to the east and the Tianshan Mountains to the north . The desert is known for the frequent occurrence of shifting dunes .
