Kung Sok-ung (* 1941 ) was North Korea's Deputy Foreign Minister between 1998 and 2016 . In 1978 he was appointed second secretary of the North Korean embassy in Singapore. This was followed in 1990 by the appointment of Vice Director General of the Office for the Middle East in the North Korean Foreign Ministry. Three years later, in 1993, he became ambassador to Jordan . In 1996, Kung was appointed Director General Without Section in the North Korean Foreign Ministry. In 1998 he became Deputy Foreign Minister.

When the Deputy Ambassador to the United Kingdom , Thae Yong Ho , and his family left for the Republic of Korea in 2016 , Kung was removed from office and banished to the countryside from the capital, Pyongyang .
