Kunle Afolayan

Kunle Afolayan (born September 30, 1974 in Lagos ) is a Nigerian film director and actor. He is one of the most important representatives of New Nollywood , a young movement in Nigerian cinema .

Life

Afolayan comes from a Yoruba family. His father is the well-known film director Adeyemi Afolayan (also Ade Love), who shot several box office hits in the 1970s.

Afolayan worked in a bank before moving into the film business in 2005, initially as an actor. Afolayan wanted his films to be released in theaters rather than directly on DVDs. His directorial debut, Irapada, was a commercial success and won numerous African Movie Academy Awards . The follow-up film The Figurine - Araromire became the most commercially successful film in Nigeria in 2009 and won numerous African Movie Academy Awards.

Afolayan became the figurehead of the New Nollywood . The New York Times referred to him in the headline of a 2012 article about him as " Scorsese in Lagos".
