History of the mill

A mill belonging to the Grafschaft monastery about 3 km away was first mentioned in the 11th century. It was located in the immediate vicinity of the Lenne outside the Schmallenberg city walls and supplied the surrounding residents with flour and oil . The oldest preserved building structure of the present mill is the foundation walls, some of which date from the 15th century.

After the secularization of 1803, the building was converted into a brewery . At the beginning of the 20th century it was restored to its original function. The mill operation was finally stopped in 1961 after a flood filled the mill ditch.

Origin and development of the Kunsthaus

In 1974 the Schmallenberg painter and artist Hermann Falke acquired the old mill. He renovated the building and set up a workshop and gallery there. Today the listed building is used by the registered association Freundeskreis kunsthaus alte mühle eV

The Freundeskreis kunsthaus alte mühle eV organizes exhibitions , vernissages , workshops and music in the building . In 2011 the Freundeskreis kunsthaus alte mühle founded the youth art school, which is located in the former "Villa Stern" at Ohlgasse 5 in Schmallenberg. In addition to an extensive program of courses for children and young people, there are regular art educational tours and work during the exhibitions in the Kunsthaus. The Lenneatelier was built by the City of Schmallenberg next to the Alte Mühle in 2015 as part of the Lennepark regional project. The association kunsthaus alte mühle has taken over the management.

Another association, the Kunstverein Schmallenberg, uses the premises in the Kunsthaus to hold concerts and readings .
