Hermann Josef Paul Falke (born September 4, 1933 in Schmallenberg ; † June 3, 1986 in Loibach , Austria ) was a German painter and graphic artist .

Life

Hermann Falke came from the Sauerland entrepreneurial family Falke and was born as the third child of the businessman Paul Friedrich Falke and Josefine Louise in Schmallenberg. Five years later he moved to Meschede . There he attended elementary school and high school. After the bombing of Meschede, the family lives again in Schmallenberg. Falke attended high school there until 1951. After his apprenticeship as a retail salesman in his parents' company in Meschede and at Peek & Cloppenburg in Düsseldorf , he increasingly devoted himself to painting. He then studied from 1959 to 1963 at the Staatliche Werkkunstschule Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe with Jupp Ernst and Karl Oskar Blase . He then founded an advertising agency in Bad Homburg with Hilmar Rust in 1963 and worked as a freelance artist.

From 1975 he devoted himself exclusively to his artistic activities and lived in Schmallenberg in what is now the Kunsthaus Alten Mühle , which he redesigned himself as a home and studio. A notice board on the building reminds of the artist. Several trips, which had a lasting impact on him and influenced his artistic work, took him to other European countries, but also to Canada, Argentina, Chile and Alaska. In 1975 he met his future wife Renate Supantschitsch-Reinwald from Southern Carinthia. From this marriage the sons Philipp and Friedemann were born. In 1976 he made his first trip to Loibach (Southern Carinthia), which he chose as a new inspiring adopted home. There he began in 1982 with the construction of the artist's house and studio, which is known today as the Falke-Haus and to a certain extent represents a symbiosis of life and work. He died in Loibach on June 3, 1986. Since 1988 the artistic estate of Hermann Falkes has been in the Falke-Haus Loibach.

Hermann Falke's early works document the constant threat, pain and grief in people with a new objectivity. In his artistic work, painting on canvas, zinc, aluminum and wood, décollages, embossed prints, etchings as well as sculptures and objects found diverse expression. In his late work he then devoted himself to the watercolor technique, taking up ancient mythological themes. These works in particular have a bewitching, cheerful lightness. The figures he creates often give birth as dream dancers over the abyss of life. The Hermann Falke Foundation in Loibach manages his estate. Some works are in the South Westphalian gallery of the slate mining and local history museum in Holthausen .
