Jupp Ernst (born December 20, 1905 in Paderborn ; † October 24, 1987 in Langerwehe ) was a German graphic artist , industrial designer and educator .

As a committed Werkbund man , he promoted good form, especially in the post-war period. The Afri-Cola bottle from 1962 is one of his best-known designs . Ernst has also developed brands. He created a corporate design for Melitta - from the brand lettering to the porcelain design of the filter bags - and the Resopal company logo and marketing .

Life

From 1926 to 1929 Ernst studied graphics at the Bielefeld School of Crafts and Applied Arts under Professors Gertrud Kleinhempel and Georg Trump . Trained in the spirit of modernism in the 1920s, he experienced its suppression under National Socialism and was all the more committed to its revival after 1945.

As director of two Werkkunstschule - the Werkkunstschule in Wuppertal and the Werkkunstschule Kassel - he made a special effort to promote the “good industrial form”. In 1949 he took part in the first Werkbund exhibition after the war, was a co-founder of the “Council for Design” and from 1951 a member of the board of the German Werkbund. From 1930 he was first married to the textile designer Tea Ernst . Also in 1951 he founded the Werkbund magazine “werk und zeit” and in 1957 together with Willem Sandberg and Wilhelm Wagenfeld the magazine “form” , for which he was editor and publisher until 1967. In 1959 Ernst entered into a second marriage with his former student Anna Renate Biermann .

Ernst worked particularly intensively for the companies Melitta , Resopal, Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau and Tapetenfabrik Gebrüder Rasch , developing their company logos and helping to build up the brands. For Melitta, Ernst not only developed the characteristic word mark , but also the green and red color concept for the packaging of the Melitta filter bags . In 1956 he introduced the Melitta coffee table ceramics to complement the coffee filters and from 1959 designed the Paris , Zurich and Ascona tableware series .

From 1963 to 1964 he was a member of the documenta council, and in 1969 he was a member of the jury for the Federal Good Form Award . At documenta III 1964 he was artistic director of the Industrial Design department .

For Ernst, the question of form was not only of economic, but also always of cultural importance. In 1987, Jupp Ernst was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

In 2005 Ernst's widow Anna Renate Biermann-Ernst handed over her husband's design estate to the design collection of the University of Wuppertal .
