Gerda Breuer

Gerda Breuer (* 1948 in Aachen ) is a German historian for the history of art and design as well as a writer and worked as a professor at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal until her retirement .

Life

Gerda Breuer studied art history, building history, philosophy and sociology in Aachen. From 1974 to 1976 and 1978 she did research stays in the USA. After a Master Accounts in sociology , she was in art history with a thesis on the genesis of national imagery in American landscape painting of the early 19th century doctorate .

After her academic training, she worked as a university lecturer in Ann Arbor (Michigan, USA), Amsterdam , Leiden , Aachen, Bielefeld and Cologne, and as a curator at international museums and exhibitions. From 1985 to 1990 she was director of the Ratingen-Cromford Industrial Museum , from 1990 to 1995 deputy director of the Mathildenhöhe Institute in Darmstadt and director of Haus Deiters - Museum of Darmstadt Artists of the 19th Century.

In 1995 she was appointed professor for art and design history at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal, where she was head of the Institute for Applied Art and Image Sciences and head of the design and photography collection there. She has also held several teaching positions and visiting professorships at home and abroad. Her research and publications are particularly dedicated to the applied arts and visual sciences, design and architecture and industrial culture of the 19th and 20th centuries. From 2005 to 2012 she was chairwoman of the scientific advisory board of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation . On the occasion of her retirement in 2014, the Berlin Nicolai Verlag published the Festschrift Querschnitte. Focus on art, design and architecture . From 2014 to 2016 she participated in the Fellowship program of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation.
