The Zhejiang Art Museum ( 浙江 美术馆 , Zhèjiāng Měishùguǎn ) is a prestige object of the (art) province of Zhejiang as part of the province's five-year plan (2003–2007) for the construction of five large structures. It was built under the direction of the well-known architect Cheng Taining ( 程泰宁 , Chéng Tàinìng ), a member of the Chinese Academy for Technical Projects. The building with exterior walls mainly made of glass elements was officially opened on August 9, 2009. It is located directly on the West Lake in Hangzhou, in a particularly romantic location between the lake and the hill of the Jade Emperor.

Museum building and goal setting

The museum is located on a plot of 35,000 m² and provides 32,000 m². The museum has over 14 different exhibition halls, six of which are air-conditioned. The exhibition rooms cover an area of ​​9000 m², the archive area is 3000 m². In addition, there is a large entrance hall, a daylight corridor, a multifunctional hall and a conference room for national conferences, a hall for assessment, a room for guests of honor, a center for art literature and documents. Due to its renowned location on West Lake, the KMZ is one of the most famous buildings in Hangzhou.

The main task of the museum is the exhibition of works of art and art documents, their presentation, collection and storage as well as the promotion of scientific research, educational exchange and service to public cultural life. The motto for founding the Zhejiang Art Museum is “The focus is on the present, and also on history. Establish yourself in Zhejiang and turn your face to the whole world ”.

The scientific objective is “public, plurality and openness”. The focus is on the collection and exhibition of works and artistic documents by contemporary artists from Zhejiang and by artists whose main work is in Zhejiang. In addition, the museum collects exemplary works and contributions from the most important currents in national and international art, as well as important results from the arts.   • Ma Fenghui ( 马 锋 辉 , Mǎ Fēnghuī ) , Director and (party) secretary of the KMZ. Born in 1963. Recognized as an excellent art teacher in China. As a painter he prefers people, birds and plants and occasionally landscapes.
  • Si Shunwei ( 斯 舜 威 , Sī Shùnwēi ). Vice Director of the KMZ. Recognized in China as an excellent art teacher. Born 1957. Editor of the magazine "Kunst Report". Active as an author of theoretical research on calligraphy and painting
  • Sang Huoyao ( 桑 火 尧 , Sāng Huǒyáo ). Currently (2013) Vice Director of the KMZ. Recognized in China as an excellent art teacher. Senior Art Critic of Zhejiang Province. Graduated from the Chinese College of Arts . Research on Chinese ink painting. Several solo exhibitions as a painter, u. a. Venice Biennale 2011.
