Cheng Taining ( 程泰宁 , Chéng Tàinìng ; * December 1935 in Nanjing , Jiangsu Province , China) is one of the leading architects in China.

Live and act

In 1956 Cheng Taining finished his training at the "Academy of Engineering, Nanjing" ( 南京 工学院 , Nánjīng Gōngxuéyuàn ) (since 1988 "Dongnan University" ( 东南 大学 , Dōngnán Dàxué )). Later he was a professor at this university and head of the Center for Building Theory and Planning.

Purpose of his work

Cheng Taining is of the opinion that architecture in China must also be based on traditional Chinese architecture in order to achieve international significance, and hereby also criticizes foreign architects who are trying to make their mark on the country of China with ever taller buildings whose dimensions are not Eliminate space constraints, but above all serve the prestige of their builders.

Cheng prefers to orient himself towards the traditional architecture of Jiangnan, the part in southern China where he himself lived for a long time. He began his actual work as an architect at the age of 45, after the end of the Cultural Revolution . A typical work for the integration of the native Jiangnan culture is the mausoleum for Lu Xun , which was completed in 2004 . The most recent of his works is the Zhejiang Art Museum , completed in 2009. He himself said of this building: “If you are planning a museum, you have to have visited hundreds of museums beforehand in order to analyze the flow of visitors and familiarize yourself with the details of the functions of a museum to make. ”For him, the basis of architectural building is not design, but building experience. A building should be embedded in the environment and also take into account the sociological conditions.
