Königsberg Copper Pond (1936)

The copper pond in Königsberg was an artificial dam in front of the Sackheimer Tor in Königsberg .

Emergence

The pond got its name from the Upper and Lower Copper Hammer that was once located there. Driven by water power, such machine hammers were widely used before the invention of the steam engine . The pond was included in the Königsberg fortification structures . When they were converted into green spaces, a large outdoor pool was built in 1925. The water area was 17,000 m 2 .

meaning

1,500 m 2 were provided for non-swimmers . An average of 1,440 visitors came every day, and 6,000 on hot days. The grandstand was separated from the water by tall roses and held 1,000 spectators. 800 m 2 of wooden bridges led to the launch sites and the diving platform . The sand areas amounted to 520 m 2 , the lawns to 8,730 m 2. There were two rubbish bins and two waste paper bins on the whole site. The "pond" was the venue for many East Prussian championships and the 1931 German swimming championship .

Current condition

Today you can only see a dirty body of water and the destroyed remainder of the former diving tower.
