Detlef Rhein

Detlef Rhein (born April 9, 1969 in Wolfsburg ) is a German designer and university professor .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1988, Detlef Rhein studied industrial design from 1990 to 1995 at Darmstadt University and the State University of California, San Jose . Internships at Adam Opel AG and frog design in Altensteig flanked the design studies. The diploma thesis Dental Treatment Chair in collaboration with Andreas Klober was awarded 2nd place at the 1995 Braun Prize. After a first position as a designer at wiege GmbH (Wilkhahn Entwicklungsgesellschaft) in Bad Münder, Detlef Rhein moved to ninaber / peters / krouwel (today npk design) in the Netherlands in 1996. In 1999 he took over the management of the Hamburg office of npk design, of which he was a partner from 2006 to 2011. In 2011 he founded the Garthoff Rhein design studio together with Till Garthoff . After teaching positions at the Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin from 2004 to 2008, Detlef Rhein was offered a professorship at the Muthesius Kunsthochschule in Kiel in 2009 for a professorship in industrial design with a focus on "methodical design of technical products" as well as for the management of the MA course in "medical design". Detlef Rhein has been a member of the “Precision Medicine in Chronic Inflammation” (PMI) cluster of excellence since May 2011.

Act

In his creative practice, Detlef Rhein mainly deals with complex innovation and technology transfer projects in different areas. The spectrum of his work ranges from public space to medical implants. Are known u. a. his designs for the Hamburg medical technology company seca for body measurement systems with regard to modular and digital system intelligence. He has a development partnership with the companies Trioptics, Biotronik and LAUDA. The central concern of Rheins is dealing with the question of how design can initiate social, cultural and technological transformation processes and support the shift towards more sustainable lifestyles.

For his designs, Rhein received national and international awards in the project collaborations, so u. a. the Good Design Award , the German Design Award , the Red Dot Award and the iF Design Award . Projects by students supervised by Detlef Rhein could be found in the design prizes for young designers. a. at the Mia Seeger Prize, James Dyson Award, Lucky Strike Junior Design Award, BraunPrize, Bavarian State Prize for Young Designers, iF Design Talent Award, German Design Award Newcomer, Core 77 Award, Federal Ecodesign Award, DDC University Award and VDID Newcomers Award.
