geography
Kurima-jima has an area of 2.84 km². The east coast of the island is characterized by steep cliffs whose highest point is 47.3 m and then slopes gently to the east.
A little less than 200 inhabitants live on the island. As on many smaller islands, the population is falling sharply. It is connected to the main island Miyako-jima by a 1690 m long bridge (for comparison: the Rainbow Bridge in Tokyo is 570 m long).
Administratively, the island forms the suburb ( aza ) Kurima of the district Shimoji of the municipality Miyakojima .
Sugar cane is grown and cattle ranched on the island.
There is a primary and a middle school, which also functions as a kindergarten and was attended on October 23, 2009 by one kindergarten child and 6 elementary and middle school students each and is operated by just as many (13) staff.
