history

Post mile column in the new town

Johanngeorgenstadt was one of the first cities in Saxony to receive a full and half mile column and a quarter milestone in 1725. A distance column adorned with coat of arms was erected on the market square on August 11, 1728. The erection of the column was originally supposed to cost 45 thalers, in the end it was more than 62 thalers. The column was made by the stonemason Matthias Lambacher. It consists of granite mined near Brettmühl . The coat of arms of the column was made by the Freiberg stonemason out of Niederschöna sandstone.

Due to the mining of SDAG Wismut , the traffic on the Johanngeorgenstadt market square increased immensely at the beginning of the 1950s. A backing truck rammed the pillar, causing it to lose its top. It is believed that she fell on the loading area and was removed. From then on the column was on the market without a point.

After adding the missing point, the distance column was moved, because almost all the houses on the market square had been demolished from 1953. The pillar found its new location in front of the main post office in Neustadt. During the reconstruction, the coat of arms was turned by 90 degrees. In 1977 the column was completely restored.

construction

The post distance column consists of seven parts. The base, pedestal and the crown of the pedestal form the substructure. The superstructure consists of an intermediate plate, shaft, coat of arms piece and attachment.
