August Lambert (born February 18, 1916 in Kleestadt , † April 17, 1945 in Kamenz ) was a combat pilot in the German Air Force in World War II and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross .

Military career

August Lambert was a lieutenant in the 5th squadron in battle squadron 2 in the retreat battles of the Wehrmacht on the Crimean peninsula in 1944. The former Stuka squadron was transformed into a new aircraft-equipped fighter-bomber squadron, whereby, in contrast to the older Stukas, the Fw 190Fs now in use were able to defend themselves against enemy fighters after fulfilling their main mission - ground combat support .

Lambert reported the downing of 70 Soviet aircraft in just three weeks. He was therefore mentioned in the Wehrmacht report on May 5 and 8, 1944 . He was subsequently promoted to first lieutenant and was awarded the Knight's Cross on May 14, 1944. Until his death, Lambert was able to shoot down 116 Soviet planes in about 350 missions in the war against the Soviet Union . He is thus the most successful interceptor of the German battle squadron and was responsible for more than a third of the aircraft kills of his battle group.

death

Lambert took over the position of the squadron captain of the 8th squadron of the battle wing 77 in 1945 . He took off with other pilots on April 17, 1945 in his Fw 190F-8 from the airfield in Kamenz . Shortly after take-off, the squadron was attacked by American low-flying aircraft. Lambert was shot down by the P-51 Mustang together with Lieutenant Gerhardt Bauer and was killed.
