Kurt Berkner

Kurt Berkner (born August 9, 1907 in Stollberg / Erzgebirge , † February 23, 1938 in Aachen ) was a member of the Merksteiner Group and died after being tortured in Nazi pre-trial detention.

Life

Kurt Berkner came to Merkstein as a child and from 1914 to 1921 attended the school newly established by the Eschweiler Mining Association (today the Merkstein community center). Later he joined the Merksteiner Group , which had formed in July 1934 and worked for the border secretariat 23 of the Sopade , headed by the former SPD Reichstag deputy Gustav Ferl in Brussels . From February 15 to 17, 1938, Berkner was arrested along with numerous members of the group. During interrogation in the Aachen police headquarters, he was subjected to torture; he died a few days later while in custody there.

In memory of Kurt Berkner, the Kurt Berkner plaque was awarded after the Second World War until around 1970 . Were awarded a resistance fighter against the Nazis from the region around Merkstein.
