Short-haul migrants

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In ornithology, short-range migrants are species whose winter quarters are seldom more than 2000 kilometers away from the breeding area. Northern European breeding birds often overwinter on the Atlantic coast , in Great Britain or in Central Europe , whereas Central Europeans usually overwinter in the Mediterranean region . The Mediterranean is rarely flown over, and if so, mostly on the so-called island routes. The Sahara is usually not crossed by short-distance migrants.

Many short-distance migrants are not obligatory migratory birds, but rather partial migrants , whose departure is also triggered by climatic events. Often several migration strategies are applied by a kind: Thus Zilpzalp or blackcap both short-distance migrant, long-distance migrant and resident bird be.

In Central Europe, the robin is perhaps the best-known short-distance migrant. Most of the individuals observed during the winter half-year in Central Europe come from northern or northeastern Europe, while the majority of the robins breeding in Central Europe spend the winter in the Mediterranean region or in southwestern Europe.
