Short toe nuthatch vanga

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bluntschli's Vanga ( Hypositta perdita ) is an invalid today Vogeltaxon that in 1996 by the German ornithologist Dieter Stefan Peters from the Research Institute Senckenberg described in Frankfurt reference to two full-fledged juvenile birds and the family family of Vangawürger was assigned (Vangidae). In 1931 the two specimens were collected by the Swiss naturalist Hans Bluntschli in a wooded area near Eminiminy north of the city of Tolagnaro in Madagascar .

features

The toes , especially the rear toes, are shorter than in the nuthatch vanga ( Hypositta corallirostris ). The morphology of the toes therefore suggests that the short-toed nuthatch vanga was not as specialized in climbing as its relative.

habitat

The habitat - primary forests and scrubland - has been significantly changed by slash and burn . During a search expedition in Andohahela National Park, in which the Eminiminy forest is located, only specimens of the nuthatch vangas were observed.

Systematics

Recently, studies, including by Steven M. Goodman , have concluded that Hypositta perdita is not a valid taxon, but that the two juvenile birds represent abnormal specimens of the nuthatch vangas. A genetic analysis from 2013, in which the Danish ornithologist Jon Fjeldså and the German palaeozoologist Gerald Mayr were involved, among others , found that the two specimens are an as yet undisclosed juvenile dress of the white-throated foditany ( Oxylabes madagascariensis ) of the family Bernieridae . In 2012 the taxon was removed from the IOC's list of valid bird taxa.
