French edition of the Kybalion (1908)

The Kybalion is a book popular among esoteric and occultists , which was first published in English in December 1908 in Chicago . The work contains seven “ Hermetic Principles ”. The authorship is not entirely clear, as the authors remained anonymous and the book itself only refers to "three initiates".

Authorship

Despite the ambiguous authorship of the Kybalion, it is possible to determine the origin of the content in more detail. The publication of the book falls into the time of the New Thought movement (Engl. New Thought Movement ) in the US. Even if the Kybalion purports to transmit pure hermetic teaching, it combines hermetic ideas with those of the New Thought. The seven Hermetic Principles are mainly reminiscent of the writings of well-known authors of that particular genre, such as William Walker Atkinson , to whom the (co-) authorship of the work was often ascribed.

In terms of content, the book refers to the statements of the Tabula Smaragdina and the Corpus Hermeticum . According to Kybalion, Hermes was an Egyptian master and founder of esoteric teachings that included alchemy and astrology . The "Hermetic Principles" contained in the book are intended to form a key to the meanings of hermetic texts. The aim of the hermetic Alchemy is loud book by no means the production of a stone of ways, which base metals thereof according to perfection in gold or silver transmuted , but the conversion of mental vibrations in other mental vibrations. Thus, in the Kybalion, spiritual and non-material alchemy is spoken of above all. This view is based on the view expressed in the book that “all” is of a spiritual nature. Its structure is now explained in more detail in seven "principles":

  1. The principle of spirituality: “The universe is spirit; the universe is spiritual. "
  2. The principle of analogy ( correspondence ): “As above, so below; as inside, so outside; like the mind, so is the body ”. The conditions in the universe (macrocosm) correspond to those in the individual (microcosm) - the external conditions are reflected in humans and vice versa. Changes in the microcosmic area consequently also had an effect on the whole (magic).
  3. The principle of vibration : “Nothing rests; everything is in motion; everything vibrates (see 5.). "
  4. The principle of polarity : “Everything is twofold, everything is polar; everything has its two opposites; Equal and unequal is the same. Opposites are identical in nature, only different in their expression; Extremes meet; all truths are only half-truths; all paradoxes can be reconciled. "
  5. The principle of rhythm: “ Everything flows - out and in (see 3.); everything has its tide; everything rises and falls, the swing of the pendulum expresses itself in everything; the swing of the pendulum to the right is the measure of the swing to the left; The rhythm balances out. "
  6. The principle of causality (cause and effect): “Every cause has its effect; every phenomenon has its cause; everything happens according to law; Chance is just a term for an unrecognized law; there are many levels of causes, but nothing escapes the law. "
  7. The principle of gender: “Gender is in everything; everything has its masculine and feminine principle within it; Gender reveals itself on all levels. "
