Kyriakos Papadopoulos (captain)

Kyriakos Papadopoulos ( Greek Κυριάκος Παπαδόπουλος ; * 1973 or 1974 ; † October 10, 2018 ) was a Greek coast guard captain and sea ​​rescuer . He gained worldwide fame when he rescued thousands of migrants en route from mainland Turkey to the Greek island of Lesbos in 2015 .

biography

Papadopoulos came from the island of Lesbos. His ancestors were Greek refugees who came to Lesbos in 1922 from Izmit, Turkey ( Nicomedia in Greek ). He was married and had two daughters. Papadopoulos was an officer in the Greek coast guard .

Because of his rescue measures Papadopoulos was considered the "hero of the Aegean " and was honored for his work by the Academy of Athens and the Greek government. The Greek director Daphne Matziaraki accompanied Papadopoulos in her documentary 4.1 Miles in 2017 . The film was at the Oscars 2017 in the category Best Short Documentary nominated.

Papadopoulos died in 2018 at the age of 44 of complications from a heart attack .
