Limeniko Soma ( Greek Λιμενικό Σώμα - Ελληνική Ακτοφυλακή Limeniko Soma - Elliniki Aktofylaki - literally "Harbor Corps - Hellenic Coast Guard") is the national coast guard of Greece .
History and structure
Similar to the Greek police, it is a civil but paramilitary organization. In crises and war situations, it reports to the Ministry of Defense and supports the Greek Navy. The coast guard was founded in 1919 by a resolution of the Greek parliament (N. 1753/1919) and is one of the oldest coast guards in the world. In 1927 its institutional constitution was reformed. The current name was decided by a law in 2011 (3022/2011).
The tasks of the coast guard consist of border protection , the fight against smuggling, especially drug smuggling and SAR operations . The Greek coast guard repeatedly rescued boat refugees from the Mediterranean. Sometimes she was also criticized for her dealings with illegal immigrants.
equipment
To carry out its tasks, the coast guard has a number of its own patrol boats, as well as helicopters and maritime patrols . Limeniko Soma also has fishery protection vessels and various land vehicles in use.
