Othoni ( Greek Οθωνοί [ ɔθɔni ] ( f. Pl. )) With an area of about 10 square kilometers, the largest of the Diapontia or Othonischen islands.
Administrative division
Until 2010, Othoni (together with the uninhabited islands of Kastrino and Ostrako ) was an independent municipality ( Greek κοινότητα kinotita ) within the prefecture of Corfu , since the administrative reform in 2010 it has belonged to the new municipality of Kerkyra , where it has since formed one of 15 municipal districts.
geography
Othoni is the westernmost island in Greece. It is located just over 20 km northwest of Corfu and almost 78 km from Cape Otranto on the Italian peninsula . The island has a length of 5.6 km in east-west direction and a width of 3.6 km. At 393 meters, Mount Fano or Merovigli is the highest point on the island.
Although the nearby island of Errikousa is 2 degree minutes to the north (and both the mainland and islands in the northeast of the country are much more northerly), Othoni is the most northwestern and, thanks to this property, extends to the island of Kastelorizo in the southeast, which is the largest stretch of Greece with 963 km.
economy
Most of the inhabitants make a living from agriculture (mainly olive growing) as well as from fishing and the very sparse tourism. There is a ferry connection to Corfu town (also transports cars) and to Agios Stefanos, from the tourist resorts in the north of Corfu, excursions are also offered.
In addition to the port of Ammos, there is also the former capital, Chorio, and several settlements and farms spread across the island.
