Stavros Niarchos Foundation
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (Ίδρυμα Σταύρος Νιάρχος) is a non-profit foundation based in Vaduz with offices in Athens , New York and Monte Carlo . She manages a large part of the estate of Stavros Niarchos . It was founded in 1996 by his heirs immediately after his death.
One focus of the foundation's activities is the promotion of programs in Switzerland and Greece . A total of 948 million euros was awarded to 1,900 organizations in 109 countries. In Germany, for example, the ChildFund Germany is supported.
Famous works from the extensive private collection of Stavros Niarchos are on loan to Swiss museums. In 2007, the Numismatic Museum in Athens was given the extensive coin collection. In 2012 the foundation bought the silver cup for the marathon winner of the first modern Olympic Games at Christie's .
The foundation financed the construction of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in Athens, which was designed by Renzo Piano and will serve as the new home of the National Library and National Opera (Εθνική Λυρική Σκηνή). With an amount of 100 million euros, projects are being financed that serve to alleviate the financial crisis in Greece.
