The Numismatic Museum ( Greek Νομισματικό Μουσείο ) in Athens shows the production and distribution of coins and payment systems in ancient Greece . Medieval European coins are exhibited on the 2nd floor . A new department is devoted to monetary union . The museum is now housed in Heinrich Schliemann's former home , the Iliou Melathron , designed by Ernst Ziller .

Shortly after Greece gained independence in the 19th century, the state put together the first coin collections in Aegina . The collection has been continuously expanded through archaeological excavations , purchases and donations. The museum was founded in 1834, when the National Archaeological Museum was established.

Over the years the museum became an independent institute through several ordinances and laws . Initially, the collection was part of the State Library of Greece , where it was first presented. In 1946 the collection was integrated into the National Archaeological Museum. The museum was declared an independent institute for the first time in 1893 and then again in 1965. The exhibition has been at the current location since December 1998 .

Furnishing

The museum's collection has 600,000 individual items, mainly coins, but also medals , standard weights , dies , stamps and other pieces from the 14th century BC. Until our time. The collection was arranged chronologically , analogous to the history of coinage . The museum holds a very important collection of coins from the 6th century BC. BC to the end of antiquity , from the epoch of the Greek Poleis to the Hellenistic and Roman periods, as well as the Medieval and Byzantine main collections from Western and Eastern Europe and the Ottoman Empire , as well as from all over the world.

Much of the collection is made up of coins discovered in depository finds , while the remainder comes from the original Aegina collection or from recent excavations in mainland Greece and donations.

Heinrich Schliemann's collection is in room II, this section pays tribute to his life, presents his numismatic collection and the work of Ernst Ziller, the building's architect. Schliemann's collection, which was donated to the museum by his wife Sophia Schliemann ( Greek Σοφία Σλήμαν), consists of 166 coins mainly from Troy .

In addition to the collection, there is a library on the history of coins in the house (12,500 books), an archive, and an elaborately equipped laboratory for the classification and conservation of historical coins.

Location and visitor information

The Numismatic Museum is located at 12 Panepistimiou (University Street ) near Syntagma Square , which is also where Syntagma Metro Station is located. There is a museum shop and a coffee house in the garden.
