Georgios Gennadios ( Greek Γεώργιος Γεννάδιος , * 1786 in Selymbria (Gr. Σηλυβρία), Eastern Thrace ; † 1854 ) was a Greek scholar (called "teacher of the people", "Διδσκαλος", "Διδσκαλος" of the 1864 uprising ) and a οτυς Γέάνς Γένος .

Gennadios was born in Silyvria in 1786. His ancestors came from Eastern Thrace and Zagori . His father was the priest Anastasios, called Papanastasios (gr. Παπαναστασίος) and his mother Anna or Susanna. Because of the cruelty of the Turks, his father decided to flee with his family and went to Silyvria in Thrace, where he died after three years. His mother moved with her son to Doliana , where her relatives were staying. There Gennadios began his schooling. When Gennadios turned out to be the best student in town, he was sent to school in Ioannina . Then he went to Bucharest to study. One of his uncles was abbot of a monastery there, his teacher Lampros Fotiadis (gr. Λάμπρος Φωτιάδης), then a famous scholar in Bucharest. Gennadios continued his studies in Leipzig in 1809 and returned to Bucharest in 1814. In 1817 he became head of the Greek school in Odessa .

During the Greek Revolution he dared to take part in various skirmishes. After the establishment of the Greek state , he worked for an orphanage on Aegina and campaigned for the establishment of the Greek National Library . Thereupon he was appointed professor and high school principal. When he died in November 1854 he was honored for his ecclesiastical and popular education work. His death has been described as a national tragedy.
