Kytheros (river)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kytheros ( Greek  Κύθηρος ) or Kytherios ( Greek  Κυθήριος ) was a river in the landscape of Elis in ancient Greece. It ended in about 40 stages of Olympia at a place called Herakleia in the Alpheios . According to Pausanias , a spring is said to have fed the river there, where a sanctuary was located. It is dedicated to the nymphs Kalliphaeia, Synallasis, Pegaia and Iasis, who are collectively known under the name Ioniden , named after the Attic founder of the colony Ion. The water of the spring is said to have had a healing effect. According to the Strabo report, it was the water of the river itself that could cure diseases.
