László Hartmann

László Hartmann (born August 17, 1901 in Budapest , Austria-Hungary , † May 16, 1938 in Tripoli , Italian-Libya ) was a Hungarian racing car driver .

Career

The son of wealthy parents began motorsport in the late 1920s. He contested his first official Grand Prix race in 1932 with a Bugatti T35B at the AVUS race on the Berlin AVUS , but retired after just one lap with engine failure.

On May 15, 1938, at the Gran Premio di Tripoli , a race endowed with 4 million Italian lire in the Autodromo della Mellaha , the Maserati 4CM from Hartmann and the Alfa Romeo Tipo 312 Giuseppe Farina came into contact on the eleventh lap . In the resulting accident, both cars rolled over and Hartmann broke his spine . Farina was injured in the accident as well as some spectators. Hartmann died the next morning in the hospital in Tripoli from his injuries. A few laps earlier, the Italian Eugenio Siena also had a fatal accident.

After a funeral speech by the Italian Marshal Pietro Badoglio , Hartmann's body was transferred to Hungary and buried in the Jewish cemetery in the Budapest district of Rákoskeresztúr .
