László Surján

László Surján (born September 7, 1941 in Kolozsvár , today Cluj-Napoca , Romania ) is a Hungarian politician ( Fidesz ). He has been Vice President of the European Parliament since January 18, 2012 .

Life

Surján worked as a general practitioner. He was university assistant at the Institute of Histology of the Medical University of Budapest and later a research assistant and university lecturer at the University for the advanced training of doctors.

Surján was from 1990 to 1995 chairman of the Christian Democratic People's Party and then its deputy chairman. From 1992 to 1998 he was Vice Chairman of the European Union of Christian Democrats. From 1990 to 1994 he was Hungarian Minister of Social Affairs. Surján was later a member of the Hungarian Parliament , where he chaired the Employment Committee before becoming Deputy Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee.

Surján was deputy group leader of the European People's Party in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe from 1999 to 2004 . He was also head of the Hungarian delegation. He has been a member of the European Parliament since 2004, where he was a member of the Bureau of the EPP-ED Group and Vice-Chair of the Delegation for Chile.

He is married and has three children.
