Legion fidèle
The Légion fidèle (German Faithful Legion ), which was also called Légion romande or Bataillon Rovéréa, was a military unit of the Canton of Bern , which existed between February 3, 1798 and March 9, 1798.
history
After the French invasion in the Vaud fled segments of the population to Bern. On February 3, 1798, the Bern War Council formed the Légion fidèle from loyal volunteers from Vaud. The Vaud nobleman Ferdinand Isaak de Rovéréa became the commander of the legion. The Legion consisted of about 620 men, who were divided into five companies. Most of them were farmers and artisans. In Kallnach the Legion collected and it came on March 5, 1798 in St. Niklaus (at Merzligen ) to a battle with French troops. After the fall of Bern on March 6, 1798, the Legion withdrew and capitulated on March 9, 1798.
