Léon de Saint-Jean
Léon de Saint-Jean (born July 9, 1600 in Rennes , † December 30, 1671 in Paris ) was a French Carmelite , theologian, court preacher and Romanist .
life and work
The theologian
Jean Macé became a Carmelite in 1616 and took the religious name Léon de Saint-Jean. He was twice provincial, then from 1660 to 1666 assistant to the superior general. Father Léon de Saint-Jean went to Paris in 1631, was in the service of Richelieu and in 1650 was court preacher. He gave the funeral sermons of Richelieu , Père Joseph and Jules Mazarin . He published numerous writings on theology.
The grammarian
Under the pseudonym Sieur du Tertre , Léon de Saint-Jean joined in 1652 the discussion of linguistic usage initiated five years earlier by Claude Favre de Vaugelas in his Remarques sur la langue françoise .
The book Méthode universelle pour apprendre facilement les langues, pour parler purement et écrire nettement en français consists of four parts, first the Méthode générale et raisonnée pour apprendre facilement les langues, principalement la Latine (pp. 1-58), then a Discours sur les difficultez de l'Orthographe françoise (pp. 59–106), a Recueil alphabétique des Remarques sur la Langue françoise (pp. 107–246; critical processing of the language glosses of Vaugelas, which were put into alphabetical order by the author), and finally a spelling dictionary by A to Z and T. Alphabet pour l'orthographe (unpaginated).
The third edition from 1664 under the pseudonym Noël François (permission to print 1657) appeared under a different title: Politesse de la langue françoise pour parler puremant et écrire nettemant en françois , renouncing the Méthode générale , puts the Recueil (1–114) before the Discours (116–152) and pages the alphabet (153–260). In the foreword, the author names three criteria for considering language: reason, usage and analogy to other languages.
