The Löberitzer Schachclub was a chess club from Löberitz that existed between 1871 and 1914 and was one of the oldest chess clubs in Germany. As a more recent successor, the chess community 1871 Löberitz was founded in 1983 .

history

The chess club was founded in 1871 by Friedrich Franz Ohme, Johann Melchior Kirsch and Friedrich Gustav Krause.

When the "German Chess Federation" was founded on July 18, 1877 on the occasion of an Adolph Anderssen celebration in Leipzig, the Löberitzer Chess Club was one of the founding members. On October 8, 1882, the Saale Chess Federation - the predecessor of today's State Chess Association of Saxony-Anhalt - was founded by chess clubs from Halle, Löberitz and Zörbig. The first president was Franz Ohme from Löberitz.

The Löberitz honorary prize tournament is traditionally held. In 1883, 21-year-old Dr. Siegbert Tarrasch , who challenged the world champion Emanuel Lasker in 1905 , prevailed as the winner.

The club existed until 1914. In the time after that there were various chess communities and circles in Löberitz.

Today's successor club

Since 1978, Konrad Reiß in particular has made a name for himself in maintaining the tradition of the Löberitz chess club. Under his leadership, the registered association Schachgemeinschaft 1871 Löberitz was founded in 1983 . In 1996 the chess community 1871 Löberitz received the sports badge of the Federal President for its "more than one hundred years of club history" . In 2007, the Löberitz Chess Museum was opened on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the first mention of the town of Löberitz . An outstanding exhibit is the first chess book “Das Schach- oder König-Spiel” by Gustavus Selenus, printed in German in 1616/17 in Leipzig . Outstanding top players were guests in Löberitz. The best German chess player after Emanuel Lasker, Robert Huebner , took part in the Löberitz honorary prize tournament several times .

Currently (as of 2020) the SG 1871 Löberitz has 54 members. The top division that the first team reached was the 2nd Bundesliga North in the 2012/13 season. In the 2019/20 season, the first team will play in the Oberliga Ost. In the 2019/20 season, the women's team won the East relay of the 2nd Women's Bundesliga and thus achieved promotion to the 1st Women's Bundesliga in 2020/21. Former Latvian Finance Minister Dana Reizniece-Ozola plays on the first board of the women's team .
