A sponge finger (also known as cat's tongue (from the French langue-de-chat), known in Austria as biscuit ) is a type of biscuit made from othellomasse (a light sponge cake ).

The sponge fingers are sprinkled with sugar and get their typical shape from a slight constriction on the side in the middle. The passable mass is sprayed onto paper-covered trays and baked at moderate heat. It is also used in ice cream cake , charlotte and tiramisu or softened as baby food .

Ladyfingers originated at the court of the Duchy of Savoy in the late fifteenth century and were invented on the occasion of a visit by the King of France. They were later presented as official pastries of the court and were particularly popular with the young members of the court. The biscuits were also offered to visitors as an example of local cuisine.

Lucky fish

In Vienna, fish-shaped sponge fingers are consumed by some people at the turn of the year, from back to front - so that the economy can move forward.
