The time of the boats

Before a public ferry opened in Losnich for the first time , individual families had their own boat to cross the Moselle. According to a decree dated February 6, 1891, the owners of Nachen were also allowed to cross others without paying a corresponding fee. Thirty-one boat owners were listed by name in Losnich in 1891.

Acquisition of the ferry

Losnich came into possession of its own ferry in 1898/99. The resolution to build its own ferry was taken by the Lösnich municipal council two years earlier on June 17, 1896. On June 5, 1897, construction was finally decided and started. The contract was awarded to the Schaubach & Crämer company in Koblenz-Lützel after a cost estimate had been obtained. The cost estimate with the ferry tower amounted to 10,698.00 marks.

This ferry was in operation for exactly 50 years. At the end of the Second World War it was temporarily sunk by the ferryman Franz Sausen, the mayor Albert Arns and some citizens to protect it from shelling and bomb hits. After the fighting ended, the ferry was immediately lifted again and put into operation, while the neighboring ferries were damaged and unusable for a long time. In 1949 it was replaced by the acquisition of the Zeltinger ferry, which had become vacant through the construction of the Zeltinger Bridge. The old Lösnich ferry then went to a fisherman in Kröv . After the Erden-Lösnich bridge was completed in 1968, the ferry service in Lösnich was finally stopped.

Bridge construction and closure of the ferry

For the villages of Lösnich and Erden , large parts of the district, especially the quality wine-growing locations, are on the opposite side of the Moselle. Crossing over by ferry was part of the everyday life of the Lösnich winegrowers in order to carry out their daily work. Risks and impairments when translating have been increased considerably by expanding the Moselle to become a major shipping route. As a result of these developments, talks were held for the first time in July 1960 between the representatives of the communities of Lösnich and Erden, the content of which was to consider building a joint bridge. The intention to interest the community of Kinheim in the construction project failed with regard to the location.

Kinheim decided to build its own commercial bridge, which created a direct connection to their district of Kindel . The initial plan of the Lösnicher and Erdener to build an economic bridge was not supported by government agencies until a new situation aroused the supra- local interest in this bridge connection: The closure of the Moselle Railway on December 31, 1962 made the towns of Lösnich and Erden hard affected. In addition to this public transport, there was only one road from Zeltingen to Lösnich, which was in a poor state of development and was hampered by narrow local thoroughfares. The operation of the ferries in Lösnich and Kindel became more and more difficult for the reasons mentioned. Finally, in February 1963, Minister of State Dr, in the meeting room of the District Office in Bernkastei Eicher delivered the assurance that suitable traffic measures would be taken to compensate for the traffic disadvantages that occurred. This included the construction of a bridge at the western exit of Lösnich and the construction of a new state road, following the route of the Moselle Railway via Erden and Rachtig to Zeltingen.

Handover and inauguration of the bridge

After work on the construction of a bridge had started in March 1965, the new bridge was officially handed over on March 16, 1968 by the Minister of Economics and Transport, Minister of State Neubauer. As part of a joint bridge festival with the neighboring town of Erden, the inauguration of the bridge was celebrated from 25 to 27 May 1968 in a ceremony. With the new bridge, the construction of the new state road started at the same time, which followed the old route of the disused Moselle Railway towards Zeltingen.
