Lion trunk & spitz
Löwenstamm & Spitz was a stone carving workshop in Brno .
history
The Jewish stonemasonry workshop Löwenstamm & Spitz was created through the merger of two stonemason companies, the workshop of the brothers Julius (1864-1939) and Salomon (1868-1933) Löwenstamm with the workshop of Jakob Spitz (1860-1933).
The Löwenstamm brothers initially worked in their place of birth, Třebíč , and later founded a workshop in Brno, where they bought Friedenthal's premises at 73 Křenova Street.
Jakob Spitz from Ivanovice na Hané owned a workshop in Brno, which was located at 55 Křenova Street.
The merger resulted in one of the largest stonemasonry companies in Moravia in 1912 . The company made tombstones for many of the region's Jewish cemeteries , such as B. for the Jewish cemetery in Boskovice .
The company existed until 1939. Its activity ceased as a result of the takeover of power by the German Reich and the persecution and discrimination of Jewish citizens (see: Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia ).
The signatures of Jakob Spitz and the Löwenstamm brothers can be found on many gravestones in the Jewish cemetery in Brno . After the merger, the tombstones were signed "Löwenstamm & Spitz".
Julius and Salomon Löwenstein, like Jakob Spitz, were buried in the Jewish cemetery in Brno.
Emmerich Spitz, who represented the company after Jakob Spitz's death, is also buried here.
