historical city map of Aachen, detail with Lütticher Schanze (right)

The Liège Schanze was the only kennel in the outer city wall of the city of Aachen, which was built around 1300–1350 . It is no longer preserved.

location

The Lütticher Schanze was located in the southwest of the outer wall ring along the section between Jakobstor and Junkerstor . On the ring of the wall stood the tower without a name , at a bend in the outer wall of the kennel the Eyerkeil tower . Since the facility began on the road to Lüttich , which is still called Lütticher Strasse today , it was called Lütticher Schanze . This in turn gave its name to today's Schanz and the Aachen Schanz train station located there .

description

From the Jakobstor to the Junkerstor, the terrain drops about 12 m over a distance of 170 m. That would have made it possible for an enemy advancing on the ridge leading to the Jakobstor to look over the city wall and shoot at the city. Therefore, this area was additionally protected by building a kennel wall in the form of a triangular hill in front of the city wall. The Eyerkeil tower was built at the top of the triangle to defend the Zwingermauer.

The Zwingermauer began at the front gate of the Jakobstor and ran from there in a straight line to the Eyerkeilturm. There she made a bend and ran to the Junkerstor, where it ended. The curtain wall, on the other hand, ran from the main building of the Jakobstor over the unnamed tower to the Junkerstor, which it did not connect to, but instead left an opening as access to the Zwinger from the city. It is not clear whether the curtain wall ran in the form of an arc of a circle as shown in old city views or, as Carl Rhoen assumed, parallel to the Zwingermauer and also made a kink.

The area of the Zwinger between the wall ring and the Zwingermauer could be controlled from the Jakobstor, the tower without a name, the Eyerkeilturm and the Junkerstor and could be shot at by attackers in the event of an intrusion. This area was also used for exercises by the Aachen city soldiers.
